born in New York, in 1919, Lawrence Ferlinghetti
was moved to France for most of his childhood. He then went to some college in America, but moved back to France to get his
Ph.D. from Sorbonne. He participated in WWII as a part of the US Navel Reserve and went to Nagasaki soon after it had been
bombed. Ferlinghetti then traveled to San Francisco to make is career in Literature. He helped start City Lights
magazine, Book Shop, and Publishing. He has written more than thirty books of poetry. He is famous for being an innovator
in beat poetry.
